Zamzam in your luggage on an Umrah transfer

How Zamzam containers change the vehicle you need for an Umrah transfer, and where to check the airline and Saudi rules before you fly.

Zamzam water containers on a filling line

Zamzam in luggage is the thing that surprises most pilgrims on the last day. Five litres is a lot of weight and a lot of space, and a boot that closed on the way in may not close on the way out. This guide explains how Zamzam changes the vehicle you need, and it points you to the official and airline sources for the flight rules, which change.

We book the road part of your trip. We do not set airline rules and we do not sell Zamzam, so any airline or airport rule below comes from a named source, or it is marked for you to confirm.

Why Zamzam changes the vehicle

Our published bag counts are large cases of 23 kg with every seat taken, plus hand bags. Zamzam containers need extra room. The reason is simple: a sealed 5 litre container is rigid, awkward and heavy, and it cannot be squashed into a gap.

Rules of thumb that our drivers use:

  • Count the containers. If each traveller buys one, that is one more large item per person.
  • Think about weight, not only space. Five litres weighs about 5 kg, before the packaging.
  • Keep the boot closed and flat. Containers should not slide in a turn.
  • Take a size up. If you are close to the bag limit, a bigger vehicle is the safe choice.

What each vehicle takes

VehicleSeatsLarge cases + hand bagsZamzam note
Toyota Camry42 + 2 handTwo large cases, or one plus a container or two
Hyundai Sonata42 + 2 handSame as the Camry
Hyundai Staria76 + 4 handGood for a family with several containers
GMC Yukon XL76 + 4 handSame boot space as the Staria, so count containers
Toyota Hiace1110 + 10 handRoom left for Zamzam on a Madinah run
Toyota Coaster1915 + hand bags in racksFor groups, quoted as one figure
Coach4444 + 44 handFor large groups, quoted as one figure

Nothing is charged by the bag up to the vehicle’s capacity. If you have more than you said, tell us as soon as you know. A bigger vehicle is better than a boot that will not close. See choosing a vehicle for your group and our fleet.

The airline and airport rules

Zamzam rules for flights come from the Saudi authorities, the airport and your airline. They have been changed over time, and sources do not always agree, so treat any article, including this one, as a pointer and check before you fly.

What we can say from named sources:

  • In May 2023 the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah announced Zamzam rules for departing pilgrims. Gulf News reported them as one 5 litre bottle per Umrah performer leaving the Kingdom, bought from an official sales point, with proof of Umrah registration through the Nusuk app.

What we cannot confirm and will not guess:

  • Whether extra containers count as excess baggage, and the charge.
  • Whether rules differ by airport (Jeddah, Madinah, Riyadh).

Ask your airline in writing, and keep the answer on your phone.

Planning the last day

For a departure from Makkah, the day goes better with a plan.

  1. Buy Zamzam from an official point. Do not take unmarked bottles.
  2. Tell us how many containers. We pick the vehicle for the real count. See Makkah to Jeddah Airport taxi.
  3. Leave extra time. Airport security may check the containers. Time your pick up from your flight. We set the time with you.
  4. Load the heavy items low. Containers go at the bottom. Soft bags go on top.
  5. Check the terminal. Which terminal your airline uses decides where we drop you. See Jeddah Airport arrival for Umrah for the terminals.

For a departure from Madinah, the Zamzam may be bought in Makkah and carried over the road first. That is another reason to size the vehicle on the way between the two cities. See the drive from Makkah to Madinah.

Three packing examples

Two travellers, two suitcases, two containers. A Camry takes two large cases, so two containers on top is right at the limit. A Staria is more comfortable.

A family of five, five suitcases, five containers. The Staria takes six large cases, so five cases fit, but five rigid containers use a lot of floor space and do not fit with them. A Hiace takes ten, which holds five cases and five containers with no margin.

A group of twelve, one container each. A Coaster takes 15 large cases, so twelve suitcases fit, but twelve containers on top do not. A Coach, which takes a large case per seat, or a second vehicle solves it.

In every case, tell us the real numbers. We say plainly whether it fits, and if it does not we quote the next size up.

Hotel storage and handling

Hotel rooms fill up with water. Ask the hotel for storage if you buy early in the stay. A few handling points:

  • Keep containers upright, away from heat.
  • Do not leave them in a hot parked vehicle.
  • Check the seal before you pack.
  • Pack soft items around them in the case.

Questions people ask

Many airlines allow a sealed container within the baggage allowance, but rules differ and change. Check your airline and the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.
