Overview

Your ride from Jeddah to Makkah via Juhfah miqat, a set point for Umrah, starts with a long drive north. Al-Juhfah lies near Rabigh, on the Red Sea coast north of Jeddah. At the miqat mosque you can put on ihram (the state of Umrah, with two white cloths for men) and pray. Your driver waits, then takes you south east to your hotel in Makkah. It is one car for about 330 km.

A taxi from Jeddah to Makkah with a stop at the al-Juhfah miqat starts at SAR 450 for the whole vehicle. Pick-up is anywhere in Jeddah, airport included. Your driver heads north to the miqat near Rabigh and waits up to 45 minutes while you change. Then on to your Makkah hotel, about 330 km.

Al-Juhfah, the miqat to the north

Saudipedia, the Saudi national encyclopedia, names five miqat points: Dhul Hulayfah (near Madinah), al-Juhfah, Qarn al-Manazil, Yalamlam and Dhat Irq.

  • Who it was set for. It is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari that the Prophet, peace be upon him, set al-Juhfah for the people of Sham. Sham is the old name for Syria and the lands around it.
  • How far it is from Makkah. About 180 km, says Saudipedia. Of the three miqat points we reach from Jeddah, it is the farthest out.
  • Its link to Rabigh. The site is in Rabigh Governorate, near the town of Rabigh. Saudipedia says a miqat in Rabigh, about 17 km away, has taken its place.
  • The old town. The Prophet stopped at al-Juhfah on his way to the Farewell Hajj. Digs have found the walls of an old Islamic town there, built of black stone.

The miqat today has a mosque, prayer halls, washrooms and places for wudu, the washing before prayer.

Which vehicle for a long day

You spend many hours in the car, so leg room matters. A Camry or a Sonata takes up to four people with two large cases. A family of five to seven has more space in the Staria or the GMC Yukon XL, and each takes six large cases.

A Hiace seats eleven. Larger parties need the 19 seat Coaster or the 44 seat Coach, so the whole group stops at the miqat together.

At Jeddah Airport, your driver stands in the arrivals hall with your name on a board. He stays there until you walk out. Send us your flight number.

The palm lined road and cycle lane along the Jeddah Corniche

In Jeddah, he comes to your hotel or home at the hour you pick. The fare does not change from one part of Jeddah to another.

From either start, the car heads north out of the city.

How to book the trip north

  1. Give the start. Send your flight number, or your Jeddah address, and the date.
  2. Name the hotel. Tell us where you stay in Makkah.
  3. Count heads and cases. Say how many people and large cases are coming.
  4. Check the reply. Our WhatsApp answer names the vehicle and gives the fare. Plans change? Read changes and cancelling.

Up the coast, then across to Makkah

  1. North out of Jeddah. The road runs up the coast for about 135 km to the miqat mosque.
  2. The mosque near Rabigh. You change into ihram, make your intention and pray. The car stays parked for you.
  3. The road to Makkah. About 195 km more, heading south east.
  4. Your hotel door. Near the Haram, the Grand Mosque in Makkah, some streets close to cars at prayer times. Your driver then stops at the closest open street.

If your group needs a longer stop, ask for it when you book. If your group leader names a certain mosque in the Rabigh area, tell us too.

Haramain railway information board in Arabic and English showing a train to Makkah calling at Jeddah Al Sulaymaniyah

Via al-Juhfah, the direct road, or the train

The direct road from Jeddah to Makkah is far shorter, and it has no miqat on it. People who fly in for Umrah normally enter ihram on the plane. If you do not need a miqat stop, book the Jeddah Airport to Makkah taxi.

No train stops at the miqat. The Haramain, the fast train between Makkah, Jeddah and Madinah, has a station in Rabigh Governorate. You would still need a car to reach the mosque. A taxi from Jeddah to Juhfah miqat and on to Makkah keeps you in one car.

What the fare covers

  • Pick-up at Jeddah Airport, or at any hotel or home in Jeddah
  • The stop at the miqat near Rabigh, with up to 45 minutes of waiting
  • Fuel, tolls and parking
  • As many bags as your vehicle class is built for
  • A child seat at no charge, once we know the child’s age

You pay the driver when you reach Makkah (how to pay). Stops you add on the day are charged (how extras are charged). For a wheelchair, read luggage and comfort.

Tips for the road to al-Juhfah

Ask before you book

Some travellers who are in Jeddah without ihram choose to enter it at a miqat first. That choice is for your scholar or group leader to guide. The driver gives no rulings.

After a night flight

Eat and drink something before the long drive north. Tell us if anyone needs a short break on the road.

One small bag

Put your ihram cloths, a towel and sandals in one bag on your lap. Your cases stay shut in the boot.

Questions about the Juhfah miqat trip

Fares start at SAR 450, and that is for the whole vehicle, miqat stop included.
