Overview

A Madinah to Riyadh taxi takes you from your Madinah hotel to any address in Riyadh, in one vehicle. Madinah lies in the west of the Kingdom. Riyadh, the capital, sits in the centre of the Arabian Peninsula, so the whole drive heads east. It is about 840 km, a drive of 8 to 9 hours with breaks on the way. You load your cases once at the hotel and unload them at your door. It suits you if Riyadh is home and Madinah is the last stop after your Umrah.

The fare for the whole vehicle starts at SAR 1,000, from a Madinah hotel to any address in Riyadh. The road east is about 840 km. Plan for a drive of 8 to 9 hours, most of a day. Stops to pray, to eat and to rest are part of the fare. You pay for your own food.

What the Madinah to Riyadh taxi costs

Picking a vehicle for many hours and many cases

On a long day, room to move matters as much as a seat. A Camry or a Sonata takes two or three people well, with 2 large cases and 2 hand bags. A family of five to seven fits better in the Staria, which holds 6 large cases and 4 hand bags. For a higher seat with the same space, pick the GMC Yukon XL.

A Hiace carries up to eleven people and 10 large cases, so a big family goes home in one vehicle. Bigger parties need the Coaster, which seats 19, or the Coach, which seats 44. A folding wheelchair fits in the Staria or Hiace boot (wheelchairs).

Your driver comes into the hotel lobby at the hour you set and finds you there. If you stay close to Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet’s Mosque, your street may be shut to cars at prayer time. In that case the driver waits on the nearest open road and helps carry the cases.

Thirty minutes of waiting at the hotel are in the fare, which leaves time to check out. After that, the hourly rate applies (how extras are charged).

Other transportation from Madinah to Riyadh

Flights run from Madinah’s airport to Riyadh and land at King Khalid International Airport. A flight also needs a ride to the airport, time for check-in, a wait for bags and a ride across Riyadh. Check flight times with the airline before you plan.

Intercity coaches link the two cities as well. They run on a timetable, from the bus station in Madinah to the one in Riyadh. So you need a ride at each end. Ask the coach company for its times. A taxi starts in your hotel lobby and stops at your own door.

Tips for a full day on the road

Leave early

If you start after Fajr (the dawn prayer), most of the drive is in daylight. You also reach Riyadh in good time to unpack.

Water and snacks

Keep a bottle of water for each person and some biscuits in a hand bag. The boot is hard to reach between stops.

Boxes of dates

Madinah is known for its Ajwa dates. If you take boxes home, count them with your cases when you book.

Parents and grandparents

Long hours in one seat make knees and backs ache. Ask for a short stop to walk whenever someone needs it. The higher seat of the GMC Yukon XL is easier to get in and out of.
