Overview

Your Jeddah to Makkah via Qarn al-Manazil taxi drives inland and climbs to As-Sayl al-Kabir, 80 km to the north east of Makkah. Qarn al-Manazil is a miqat, a set point where Umrah travellers put on ihram, the Umrah state with two white cloths for men. At the mosque, take the time you need to change and pray. He stays nearby. Then he takes you down to your Makkah hotel. Pick-up is at Jeddah Airport or any Jeddah address, for about 260 km in all.

Jeddah to Makkah, stopping at Qarn al-Manazil to enter ihram, costs from SAR 600 for the whole vehicle. The miqat mosque stands in As-Sayl al-Kabir, beside the Makkah to Taif road. Your driver waits there up to 45 minutes while you enter ihram. The trip ends at your Makkah hotel after about 260 km.

Qarn al-Manazil at As-Sayl al-Kabir

Qarn is the name of a whole valley near Taif. Saudipedia, the Saudi national encyclopedia, says the mosque of Miqat Qarn al-Manazil stands on its east bank. Today people call it As-Sayl al-Kabir (also written As-Sail Al-Kabir).

  • Set for the people of Najd. Sahih al-Bukhari records that the Prophet, peace be upon him, gave Qarn al-Manazil to the people of Najd, the high centre of Arabia. Saudipedia adds people from the Gulf and those on their road.
  • Where it sits. Saudipedia puts it 80 km to the north east of Makkah and 35 km north of Taif.
  • High ground. The mosque is about 1,200 m above the sea, so the road climbs from the coast.
  • What you find there. A mosque, car parks and washrooms.
  • Its past. The Prophet stayed at Qarn on his way to Taif in the year 630. Later it was a stop on an old Hajj road from Yemen.

A second miqat mosque, Wadi Muharram, lies in the same valley on the Al Hada road near Taif. This trip goes to the mosque at As-Sayl al-Kabir.

Qarn al-Manazil trip fares from Jeddah

Prices are in Saudi Riyal, and each one hires a whole vehicle for the single run. It goes from your Jeddah pick-up, through the stop at As-Sayl al-Kabir, to your hotel in Makkah.

Tips for the As-Sayl road

Which mosque

This trip uses the As-Sayl al-Kabir mosque. Check that this is the one your group leader means.

Leaving Jeddah

City traffic is slow at busy hours. An early start gets you to Makkah sooner.

A first Umrah

If you are in Jeddah without ihram, speak to your scholar or group leader before you book. They can say if a miqat stop is right for you. Your driver will not give a ruling.

Questions about the Qarn al-Manazil trip
