Old Yanbu on the Red Sea

Yanbu is a coastal governorate in Madinah Province, the province to the north of Makkah. Its old part, Yanbu al-Bahr, faces the sea.

In the Islamic era, Yanbu grew into a major trading port, Saudipedia says. Caravans and ships came to it from Egypt, the Levant and North Africa. Al-Shuna Tower still stands in the old port area. It was built in 1519 and once held grain brought in by sea.

The old Al-Sur district keeps the homes of Yanbu’s early traders. They were built from sea stone and palm trunks. The houses have mashrabiyas, wooden screens with small openings that sit over the windows. Their wooden doors are a style the town is known for.

Your taxi stops at your Yanbu address. Seeing the old town is up to you, at a time that suits you.

What each Yanbu fare pays for

Every fare is for a single vehicle and all the seats in it. It runs one way, from your Makkah hotel to your address in Yanbu. It is in Saudi Riyal, and both rest stops are part of it.

Pick-up at your Makkah hotel

We fix the pick-up hour with you, and the driver meets you inside your Makkah hotel. The fare includes 30 minutes of waiting there (waiting).

Around prayer times, cars cannot always get close to hotels beside the Haram, the Grand Mosque. If that happens, the driver tells you on WhatsApp where he has stopped, and you walk the short way to him.

The drop-off can be anywhere in Yanbu al-Bahr or Yanbu Industrial City, for one fare. Rides around Makkah before you leave, such as to the train station, are on Makkah taxi.

Booking from Makkah

  1. Name your Makkah hotel. The hotel name is enough for the driver to find you.
  2. Size up the group. Count adults, children and large cases, and Zamzam too.
  3. Approve the price. It comes on WhatsApp in writing, with the vehicle named.
  4. Note the driver’s phone. We send it to you ahead of the trip.

Message us on WhatsApp, at any hour.

Straight to Yanbu, or by way of Madinah

From Makkah you can go straight to Yanbu in one drive. If you also want time in Madinah, split the trip in two. First comes the Makkah to Madinah taxi. Then, when you are ready, go on with the Madinah to Yanbu taxi.

The direct drive is one trip on one day. The two step plan adds Madinah to your travels, with a night or more there in between.

Give each child’s age and a child seat comes free (child seats). Nothing is paid up front, and the driver takes payment in Yanbu (how to pay). Need a new date? Cancelling and changing has the rules.

Tips before you leave Makkah

Pick-up away from prayer time

Roads by the Haram may shut near a prayer. A pick-up time well clear of one is easier for everyone.

Zamzam in the boot

Each container needs boot space. Add them to your case count when you book.

Yanbu weather

Saudipedia gives summer highs of up to 49 degrees Celsius in Yanbu, and winter lows of about 12. A light jacket helps on winter evenings.
