Overview
A Madinah to Badr taxi picks you up at your Madinah hotel, drives you about 150 km to Badr and brings you back the same day. Badr is the town where the Battle of Badr was fought, a key battle in the early years of Islam. At Badr you visit Masjid al-Arish, look at the martyrs’ cemetery from outside its wall and walk out to the battlefield. Plan for about 5 hours from your hotel and back.
A day trip from Madinah to Badr and back costs from SAR 400 for the whole vehicle. Badr is about 150 km from Madinah, around 2 hours each way. The fare includes up to 45 minutes at Badr and the drive back to your hotel, about 5 hours in all.
What you see at Badr
Badr is a town in Madinah Province, south west of the city of Madinah. The places linked to the battle lie close to each other, and your driver takes you from one to the next.

Masjid al-Arish
It marks the place the Muslim leaders used as their base during the battle. Its name comes from the Arabic word for shade made of palm branches.

The martyrs’ cemetery
The companions who died in the battle are buried here. The gate is usually shut, so visitors look in from outside the wall.

The battlefield
An open plain with hills around it. The martyrs’ cemetery lies on this plain.

Jabal al-Malaikah
Its name means the Mountain of the Angels. Going there adds a short drive of about 4 km from Masjid al-Arish, so ask for it when you book.
Badr has no museum open to visitors, so the visit is outdoors. For the history and the names of each place, read the Badr guide.

Choosing a vehicle for the day
You carry little on a day trip, so a Camry or a Sonata is enough for up to four people. A family of five to seven sits in more comfort in the Staria. The GMC Yukon XL also has seven seats, with a higher seat for older visitors.
Eleven people or fewer can share one Hiace. Mosque and travel groups take the Coaster or the Coach, so everyone stays together.
Which vehicle fits?

More time at Badr, or a trip out to Jabal al-Malaikah, is paid by the hour. The driver tells you the amount before the extra time starts (how extras are charged).

A day trip, or Badr on the way to Makkah
This trip starts and ends in Madinah. You come back to the same hotel the same day.
If you are leaving Madinah for Makkah, you can see Badr on the way instead. The Madinah to Makkah taxi has a via Badr choice with its own fare. That longer drive still stops first at the miqat, the point where you must be in ihram (the Umrah state) before you reach Makkah.
