Badr ziyarat: the battlefield, Masjid al-Arish and the martyrs’ cemetery
A Badr ziyarat takes you to the plain where the first great battle of Islam was fought in 2 AH (624 CE). Many pilgrims want to see it when they travel between Makkah and Madinah. This page explains what is at Badr, where it is, how long a stop takes, and how to add it to your journey by private car with a driver who waits for you.

What Badr is
Badr is a town and governorate in Madinah Province. It is also called al-Safra, after the valley of Wadi al-Safra where the well of Badr lies. Saudipedia says the governorate is about 310 km north west of Makkah and about 150 km south west of Madinah. Other sources give slightly different distances to Madinah, from 130 to 157 km, depending on where they measure from.
In Islamic history, the Battle of Badr took place on 17 Ramadan in the second year after the Hijrah. A small Muslim force met a larger army of Quraysh. The battle is named in the Quran, and the Quran also names al-Adwa al-Dunya and al-Adwa al-Quswa, the two ridges that the Saudipedia article on the battle site places on either side of the water.
We do not give religious guidance. Our drivers know the roads and the sites, but they are not scholars. For questions about what is recommended when you visit, ask your group leader or a scholar.
What visitors see at Badr
Saudipedia and Visit Saudi list these main places.
- The battlefield. The open plain where the battle was fought. Visit Saudi lists the battle site as open daily, all day.
- Masjid al-Arish. The mosque built where, according to Visit Saudi, the Prophet, peace be upon him, set up his tent during the battle. Saudipedia describes the place as the Muslim command centre.
- The martyrs’ cemetery. It holds the companions who fell at Badr. Sources give the number as thirteen or fourteen, because they differ on whether Ubaidah ibn al-Harith is buried here or at as-Safra. There are no headstones. Visitors usually see it from outside the wall and railing, because published visitor information says the enclosure is closed to public entry.
- Jabal al-Malaikah. The Mountain of the Angels, about 4 km north west of Masjid al-Arish.
- The well of Badr. Saudipedia lists it as a landmark in Wadi al-Safra. We found no official page that describes the wells as they are today.
Where Badr is, and why it is a longer drive
Badr is not on the main Makkah to Madinah highway that most taxis use. Saudipedia places it where Main Road 60 meets the Main Coastal Road 5. A trip via Badr therefore leaves the direct road for part of the way and rejoins it near Madinah.
A route calculation on the public OSRM server, run on 2 October 2026, gave about 474 km from Makkah to Madinah via Badr against about 436 km direct. In the other direction it gave about 511 km against about 441 km. That is roughly 40 to 70 km extra. These are free flow figures without stops, so real journeys take longer.
In plain terms, a stop at Badr adds:
- About 40 to 70 km of extra driving.
- A stop of up to 45 minutes at the site.
- About 1.5 to 2.5 hours in total over the direct road, so plan about 5.5 to 7.5 hours instead of 4 to 5.
If you want longer than 45 minutes, for example to walk to Jabal al-Malaikah, tell us when you book. Extra time is charged at the hourly rate.
How a stop at Badr usually goes
- Arrive and park. The driver parks near Masjid al-Arish or the battle site, whichever suits your group.
- Walk the site. Most people look over the plain, visit the mosque and view the cemetery from outside. Allow about 30 to 45 minutes for this.
- Return to the road. The driver continues to Madinah or Makkah.
Go early in the day if you can. The plain has very little shade, and summer temperatures in this region are high.
Practical notes
- Dress and behaviour. The cemetery is a burial ground, so keep voices low and dress modestly.
- Heat and water. There is little shade. Ask for chilled water when you book, and it helps to carry a bottle.
- Wheelchairs. A folding wheelchair travels in the Staria or Hiace boot at no extra charge, and the driver helps the passenger into a seat. Tell us before booking if the passenger cannot leave the wheelchair.
- Ihram. If you plan to enter ihram on the Madinah to Makkah journey, tell us when you book. Which miqat applies to your route is a question for your group leader or a scholar.
- New projects. The Saudi Press Agency reported in March 2026 that a 157 km “Badr Historical Path” between Madinah and Badr was launched, with more than 40 landmarks. Access and services may change as it develops, so your driver will tell you what is open on the day.
